Alive and well

In which G.M. Norton feels alive.

Back in October, when announcing that I'd decided to step away from the editor's desk at In Retrospect magazine, I revealed something extremely personal - my struggle with depression.

I received so many messages from readers, it was truly heart-warming. Including fellow sufferers, sharing their experiences and advice.

I thought it was time for an update on how I've been getting on.

In truth, it's not been the best of starts to 2018. Lucy, my family's dear cocker spaniel sadly passed away. A member of the family, she is greatly missed.

To add to this, another family member has been critically ill in hospital. Thankfully, we're hopeful they'll make a recovery.

Despite all this, I'm managing to cope. And the Black Dog hasn't made another appearance, which I'm incredibly grateful for.

At the moment, I'm really looking forward to Spring. As a confirmed lover of the dark and cold winter months, I'll be relieved for a little more daylight.

Despite being a month or so away from the official start of Spring, this week has started to feel like it's already here. Although we had snow, we've also had a little sunshine. The birds are chirping, flowers are starting to sprout. New life is on it's way.

I'm enjoying the little things.

My two daughters provide so much joy, every hug and kiss means so much. They make me proud each and every day.

My beloved is my everything. We've been together for 13 years now and have been through so much. She is my best friend, the love of my life, and I know she is there for me and me for her.

So I suppose this has turned into quite a soppy entry (that sounds wrong).

What I'm trying to convey is that this is life. There are ups and downs, incredible sadness mixed with incredible happiness. But I wouldn't have it any other way.

After feeling numb about life for large chunks of last year, it's a relief to now feel something. This in itself is an achievement worth celebrating.

  1. I'm so sorry about Lucy. Pets are such a part of families aren't they? But it's good to hear an update from you - I hope that as Spring arrives your spirits start to lift.x
