Off with his head

In which G.M. Norton seizes control of his follicly-challenged head.

A little over a year ago, I discovered that I was going bald. It was a shock to the system as I've always had very thick hair. It may sound short-sighted, foolish even, but I never thought that I'd lose my hair. Whenever I pictured myself in my more advanced years, I always had a full head of hair.

I've spent the last year or so coming to terms with the idea of losing my hair. I've also been keeping a very close eye on it. Alas, the top of my head has continued to thin and my already high hairline has crept further and further back.

In my periodical entry on my hair loss discovery, I stated that the idea of having a completely bald head made me physically sick. But as a realistic sort, I've actually warmed to the idea of sporting a sans hair look. So much so that I started to look forward to getting rid of my hair completely. It's a strong look, a statement.

Feeling that my hair was disappearing before my eyes and keen to take control, over the festive period I took the plunge and shaved my head.

Here are the results.

Review: Savile Row Company

In which G.M. Norton samples some new shirts from Savile Row Company.

I love getting new shirts. There’s just something very pleasurable about removing a pristinely-folded shirt from it’s plastic wrapping and knowing that nobody has ever worn it before. It's yours and only yours.
I must be honest and admit that the majority of the shirts that I tend to buy are from charity shops. While that means that I get to sample some of the finest shirts for a relative pittance, it does mean that I miss out on that new shirt experience.

Dreaming of a warm Christmas

In which G.M. Norton looks at some warm, snug options for this Christmas time.

It's definitely getting chillier by the day, which is just as well, as I love to wrap up in layers at this time of year.

Chained to my desk in an office during the week, the temperature is never quite right. Too stifling one minute, freezing the next. The heating must have been on the blink on Tuesday though as it was perishing. In fact, one fellow sat across from me kept his hat, scarf and coat on until early afternoon.
That got my mind racing with thoughts of knitwear, and thick, heavy ones at that. I have a real hankering for a shawl necked cardigan at the moment.

The right trousers

In which G.M. Norton pockets a new pair of trousers.

Ever since I first read about them in The Chap magazine a few years ago, I’ve been longing for a pair of leg warmers from Spencers Trousers.
If you’ve not previously heard of them, Spencers are a factory based in Yorkshire that make trousers to your exact measurements. Just a week after placing your order, they’re made up and sent to you, wherever you are in the world.

Unhappy with the fit of my trousers, my longing to get my first pair from Spencers has only increased when seeing all the dapper chaps on Instagram wearing them. The way I see it, if trousers are being worn by men as far as Denmark and Germany, they must be pretty darn special.

Norty's Christmas gift ideas

In which G.M. Norton puts on his Christmas thinking cap.

Hurrah, for it is December!

I absolutely adore this time of year. The cool mornings, hot food, the need to wrap up warm and the festive excitement.

What I can't abide though are the busy shops, which is why I try to do most of my Christmas shopping online. Rather than shop at the big stores, where I can, I do like to give my money to the little independent enterprise or maker instead.

If you're stuck for Christmas ideas for the fellow in your life, or would like some ideas for treating yourself, then please allow me to suggest a few things.
